Klondike 2002 Trailblazer District Chippewa valley Council Boy Scouts of America To all Troops and Webelos Packs in the Chippewa Valley Council, plan on attending this years' 2002 Klondike Derby. This years' Klondike's theme is "Test your Woods Skills" The place is lower Irvine Park in Chippewa Falls. The time is January18-19 Friday night through Saturday The goal: To test Troops, Scouts and Webelos outdoors wood skills. The Cost $5.00 for the event per participant There will be a $6.00 late fee per participant. Also, participation ribbons and patches are not guaranteed for late arrivals! Each Troop and or patrol that participates will need to have knowledge of their scouts woods skills. Therefore, the following information may be of some help. The resources for the needed information are the Boy Scout Handbook and The Fieldbook of the Boy Scouts of America. Since the location of Lower Irvine park does not have much wood for fire burning, it is strongly advised each unit bring its own firewood or other source of heat. This Klondike will be practicing LNT (Leave No Trace). No Ground Fires ALLOWED! Bring your own water supply! There will be a heated shelter available for cold weather emergencies. Saturday's noon lunch will again be served community style. Each participant is ask to bring one can of food with them to be turned in at registration. Please choose from the following list of foodstuffs to bring: Kidney beans, Sloppy Joe Mix, Chili, Tomato chunks. NO TOMATO SOUP! Each scout should bring with him besides his normal camping gear a bowl, spoon and insulated Mug. Hot Chocolate will be provided as well as coffee. Each Troop's entry into the competition will need the following: Dog Sled- on the sled should be: First Aid Kit Blanket Matches- properly stored Pocket Knife for each SCOUT! Candy Bar for each SCOUT! Firestarter Candle Pot Water Source- Minimum 1 quart Equipment pack for above items Your sled will be registered and scored upon entry into the stations. The following stations may or may not be scored. Proficiency at each will be rewarded. Toten Chit- Completion of this card allows you to proceed with the course. Proof of previous completion shows "A scout is prepared." Fireman's Chit- Same as above. This skill is a must in the winter time. Whittling' Chit - Same as a Toten Chit, but only for Webelos. Fuzzy Stick- Learn how to make and use these sticks at this station. 2 Man Cross cut- Northern states had their land cleared by real men who worked as a team using this tool. Bow saw 1 man- Careful, it takes great knowledge to understand the use of this instrument. Sled race- The ultimate in Fun. Here the patrol finds out about leadership and teamwork. String Burn- Are you able to burn the top string without having the firelay go beyond the bottom string? Boil Water- There's more to this station than just meets the pot. Ax Skills- Yes, the Boy Scout Handbook demonstrates ax procedures. But, have you practiced the right way? Space blanket- No, Captain Kirk does not need more power from Scotty. What is needed is experience and patrol teamwork. Lashing log carry- Will need more than just 4 bodies to accomplish this task. Rescue signals- Those that build the most with knowledge will survive and pass. Wet Wood Fire building- Something new? There will be points awarded at some stations while others are instructional. However, the goal is to attend all stations and to accumulate points. Other points may be earned throughout the event. Why accumulate points? For the Traveling Trophy of course. New this Klondike will be the presentation of a Traveling Trophy. The troop with the most points will receive a trophy which will be awarded to them. Points can be earn by the troop having the highest percentage of scouts attending the KIondike, neatness of campsite, willingness to follow the Scout oath and Law. The troop will than get to keep the trophy until the next Klondike! But, there name will be engraved on a plaque which will than be attached to the trophy! Also, lets not forget about the competition of the stations. First, second, and third places will be awarded for the points scored from the stations. Participation ribbons and patches will be given to each participating unit, troops and packs alike. That is why early pre-registration is important. The cost of this weekend has been kept down to assure maximum participation with Maximum effort put into FUN!
