June 5-21, 2016,
the Scouts of
Troop72.com
embarked on the greatest adventure in Scouting:
PHILMONT!
Day 6 (7/13/16): Puebalon to Maxwell (& Miranda) (8.01 miles)We slept in once again, in luxurious 44 F temperatures, this time until 6:20 am! This was because we had to wait around for our 8am slot for spar pole climbing. Each of the boys got to climb up a very tall "tree" using lumberjack equipment. Some of us washed and dried our clothes during those three hours. We finally hit the trail at 10:50, hiking a steep uphill to Head of Dean, where we ate lunch. By now we had worked out several harmony parts to the Philmont Hymn, so when we performed it for the very appreciative staff at HOD, they gushed that we had "WON PHILMONT!" We continued on to Maxwell, where we set up our tents. Then we headed up to Miranda, returning our Burros, "M'Boy" and "Turbo," on the way. At Miranda, Captain Jack taught us some tomahawk throwing skills. Miranda was right in the shadow of Mt. Baldy, which we would summit the next day. We were back at our camp and sleeping by 9pm, since we knew we had to make a VERY early start tomorrow for the summit. Total mileage today was 8.01 miles at pace of 30:33. Here are a some photos I took with my new Canon 70D camera. - Tom Arneberg (toma@arneberg.com) |
