June 5-21, 2016,
the Scouts of
Troop72.com
embarked on the greatest adventure in Scouting:
PHILMONT!
Day 11 (7/18/16): Cimarroncito to Upper Clark's Fork (10.02 miles)We woke up at 5:30 a.m. to a beautiful 58-degree sunny morning. We packed up quickly and hit the trail, climbing out of Cito in search of Window Rock. When our navigator for the day, Samuel Zwickel, finally found Window Rock, it was definitely worth the wait! We spent over an hour there, eating breakfast and enjoying the breathtaking views. Next stop was Waite Phillips's Hunting Lodge, where we had a guided tour and sang the Philmont Hymn AND the Star Spangled Banner in four-part harmony. We ate lunch there after the tour. There was much debate about whether to stop at the Demonstration Forest, but in the end the boys decided to at least hear a lecture. They really enjoyed it! Best of all, one of the foresters there married a man from Chippewa Falls!! She knew all about Irvine Park, Leinie's Lodge, and all the other things from home that were slowly fading from our memories. It reminded us that yes, we DO have a home to get back to some day. It started raining at the demonstration forest, and continued as we got back on the trail. We got to Clark's Fork at 12:30 and cooked our dehydrated meal (spaghetti) with the help of the Texas troop's stove. After some of us had our boots and hats and belts branded, we hiked the mile to our campsite at Upper Clark's Fork and set up our tents. Then we hiked back to the main camp to eat supper and to enjoy the evening campfire. Unfortunately, we didn't get to experience the campfire with the best views in all of Philmont, as it was still raining. But there was a huge porch at Clark's Fork, so the musicians performed there and everyone had enough room to stay out of the rain. We were a little melancholy about our last night on the trail. It was a dry camp, so we all loaded up on water at Clark's Fork -- 2.5 gallons per person (that's TWENTY POUNDS!) -- before returning to our tents to get a good night's sleep in anticipation of our final assault: The grueling Tooth of Time hike into base camp. (Total distance: 10.02 miles; avg. pace 24:26.) Here are a some photos I took with my new Canon 70D camera. - Tom Arneberg (toma@arneberg.com) |
