Troop 72 at Philmont 2016: Day 3
June 5-21, 2016, the Scouts of Troop72.com embarked on the greatest adventure in Scouting: PHILMONT!

Day 3 (7/10/16): Anasazi to Horse Canyon (11.16 miles)

Day 3 (Sun, July 10, 2016) at Philmont: We were awake at 5:15 am in Anasazi, and were packed up and hiking on the trail by 6:31. It was only a thirty-minute hike to our first stop for the day, Indian Writings. There we ate our breakfast on the expansive front porch, then tried our hand at "atlatl" (spear throwing). After touring some centuries-old petroglyphs and participating in a real archaeological dig, we then hiked another 3.17 miles to Philmont's newest staffed camp, Metcalf Station.

They are building a REAL RAILROAD at Metcalf! Or maybe I should say, WE were building a real railroad. We took turns nailing in spikes, and helped to bolt two sections of rail together. As one of the staffers told us, this is the only place in America where teenage boys can actually build a railroad! After our shift, we took turns riding the hand-pump car a quarter mile back to the buildings where we did some blacksmithing.

From Metcalf, we hiked to Horse Canyon, our trail camp for the night. It took another 2.54 miles of frustrating wandering to find the water supply, but we finally got our dinner made around dark. Total distance for the day was 11.16 miles in 4:01, for an average of 21:00 min/mile.

Here are a some photos I took with my new Canon 70D camera.
