embarked on the greatest adventure in Scouting:
PHILMONT!
Day 2 (7/09/16): Six-Mile Gate to Anasazi (2.14 miles)
Tuesday, July 9, 2016 was officially "Day 2" in Philmont terms --
the day we'd actually HIT THE TRAIL! We woke up at base camp by 5:30
a.m., and quickly stuffed all our non-trail gear into the two storage
lockers provided. It was a very tight fit. After a 6:30 breakfast in
the cafeteria, we checked out of "tent city" and made one last dash to
the trading post before loading our packs onto the school bus at 7:30.
Less than an hour later we were standing at Six Mile Gate, where
Ranger Dave continued his training. It was HOT! We later learned that
the official temperature that day was 102 F. After a very short hike
of 2.14 miles in 46 minutes (avg. pace of 21:43 min/mile), we set
up camp at Anasazi. Ranger Dave led us in the Philmont Way to cook a
dehydrated meal (and how to "human sump" the leftovers), and then we
all climbed to the top of the nearby canyone walls for a devotional
and to watch the gorgeous sunset over Philmont's North Country.
Here are a some photos I took with my
new Canon 70D camera.
